Distance Learning and Education: Why Learners Need Their Parents’ Guidance

Why Learners Need Their Parents’ Guidance for Distance Learning and Education

Learning is one of the most critical components in the ingredients needed to succeed.  Whether it is lessons learnt (learned) in life by accident or by design; or it is intentional academic learning.  However, there is no doubt about the role of parents in this process.

Something to think about:

Had your parents not brought you up the way they did, would you be interested in succeeding in your life?  It is most unlikely, yes, probably not.  Whether your parents encouraged you to study, or by whatever challenges they faced, could not afford to pay for your education, they still had some influence in your decisions that you have made throughout your life.

So my point is:

In every situation, a support structure is important.  In my experience talking to many people from all walks of life, one of the most common comments or statements is the role that other people, mostly their parents, played in their lives, and ultimate success.  I have spoken to very successful entrepreneurs, academics, corporate ladder climbers and street-smart business people; and this has resounded throughout my conversations with them.

So what has this got to do with e learning or online learning?

Once again, everything!  Online, e-learning has revolutionized how learning is delivered to students.  This method of education allows people from all corners of the globe, from different walks of life and with different educational experiences to be given the same benefits.  Parents can also take time to study, in order to improve their own lives, thereby setting an example; and then also be able to understand the challenges faced by their children in the online education system.  This approach ensures that parents, who always made sacrifices for their children’s education, can now play catch up, and do what they would have also liked to become.  In this way, parents can never use their sacrifices for their kids as an excuse for not being successful in their own goals, dreams and careers.

The benefits of Distance Learning:

  • It allows family to spend time together
  • They can even study together
  • Everyone gets to pursue their careers
  • It is cheaper than traditional/conventional study methods
  • It teaches discipline
  • It provides flexibility

So online distance learning seems to carry the much-needed and highly sought-after solutions to many of life’s challenges and problems.  Where access to money is a problem, distance learning is cheaper.  Where access to transport facilities is a problem, distance learning comes to you. Where other infrastructural problems exist, online distance learning is delivered via cell phone, or via the internet.

So, no more excuses why families should not be more successful, more supportive and generally much happier.

No more excuses of why people cannot reach their goals in education, become more successful in their businesses and climb higher in their corporate jobs.

What (e) Learning Can Teach You…

What e learning can teach you

What e learning can teach you

Introduction

After an absence of more than ten years from any active physical sport, or good physical activities, I finally made up my mind that I am going to buy that new squash racquet and go back to the sport.  I must admit, it took some self-motivating and discipline to eventually buy the racquet.  You know how it is; ten other “priorities” will always come up and test how badly you want this.  Suddenly I don’t have enough money, so I have to ask “Do I really need this?” And the answer is always the one that makes you not to commit to the decision that you have already made.  When I eventually bought the racquet, it felt good; but that was not good enough for me to play, I further needed the motivation to actually go to the squash courts and start playing….

Procrastination

And when I did this morning, it felt good…my mind started wondering as I hit that ball against the wall, the sides, and no, don’t even ask, I was like an amateur.  Then I realized how this must be for all other aspects of our lives:

  • The business you have been thinking about starting, but find yourself putting it off….
  • The trip that you must take to the countryside….
  • The course that you want you study, but you don’t have enough time or money…
  • The job that you hate and want to change, but too afraid of the unknown….

We sometime feel inadequate to attempt a task, especially if we have not done that task before, and sometimes if we have not done it for a while.  Don’t put off tomorrow what you can to today!  This is the mother of all evils, procrastination…

PS. I had been using my professional work as an excuse for not doing any routine physical exercise, but I could sometimes have time to go out for a meal, a drink and socialize with friends!!

Determination

However, if we have the determination, other aspects will follow.  Generally, any studying, whether it is face-to-face, lecture-based or e learning (traditional distance learning included), requires some discipline to begin the studying routine.  But you will find that it becomes a part of your daily programme and a result, it seems easier, or at least “do-able”. Everything has to be started, and this in my experience, I have found to be the most difficult; and then once the habit has been set in motion, there seems to be some momentum that carries you through.

Lesson to Be Learned (Learnt)

Education, not just academic, requires you to take the first step.  In order to walk, one has to move the one foot first, and then the other, and suddenly you have rhythm, and you are walking; your legs seem to have taken over and doing this on their own! Yes, I know that sounds like a trivial example, but literally that is how many things work.  Some things are easier when they are done, and more difficult whilst thinking about them.  Here is the beauty about e-learning:

  • You set your own Pace…
  • Your own Time…
  • Your own Space…

My legs are sore, my muscles in my body are stiff, but I am looking forward to tomorrow…

The Value of International Certifications

100% Graduation-Guarantee - Customer satisfaction

100% Graduation Guarantee - Customer satisfaction. That's Quality...

Preamble:

I graduated from College with a Diploma in PC Engineering; and this was a one year Diploma from Damelin College.  The qualification comprised of the following subjects:

  • Concepts of Data Processing and Data Communications
  • PC Engineering – Upgrading and Repairing of PCs.
  • Operating Systems
    • Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11
    • MS DOS ver 3.0 – 5.0
  • WordPerfect for DOS and Windows
  • Lotus 1-2-3 for DOS and Windows
  • dBase
  • Networking Concepts    and Principles.
  • PC Tools and Virus control.
  • Programming in “C” Language.

Challenges:

All these subjects were internally moderated and assessed.  And since then, many other colleges offered this qualification with the same name PC Engineering, but every college offered its own “flavour “of the Diploma.  Now this meant that every qualification for these graduates, made them walked away with different aspects of this “IT Knowlegde”.  For me this means that the caliber of graduates was different.

The only difference during this phase came when we wrote external exams which were mapped to the Computer Users Council of South Africa (C.U.C.S.A.), later named the Information Technology Users’ Council (I.T.U.C.), these were administered by the Computer Society of South Africa (C.S.S.A).  This provided a platform for learners from different educational institutions to write the same exams regardless of where they studied.  Qualifications offered, amongst others, were for subjects such as:

  • Cobol Programming
  • Practical Networking
  • Concepts of Data Processing and Data Communications.

Something to think about:

Changes in the Information Technology saw the focus changing from technology only referring to Computers to a wider inclusion of other electronic and communications.  Hence the term Information Technology (I.T.)/(IT) was adapted to include other sectors, Information and Communications technology (I.C.T)/(ICT).  This started creating various challenges.

Vendors from different industries realized the importance of assessing learners from different walks of education life to adhere to the same standards.  These trends were already happening in other sectors such as Finance, Engineering and so forth.  The players in the IT sector were the likes of Microsoft with their Microsoft Certified Systems Engineering (MCSE), Novell with their Certified Novell Administrator (CNA), and Lotus with their Lotus Notes Certified Engineers (LNCE) etc.  Others are the Computer Technology Industry Association (CompTIA), with their A+, N+, Linux+ certifications. This became an international trend.

Graduates and Unemployment:

With the education sector not being able to produce enough skilled graduates, and unemployment statistics on the rise, all sorts of educational institutions popped up from everywhere offering the likes of the PC Engineering Diplomas.  This created the very problem addressed previously of different standards in these institutions.  The international certifications somewhat addressed some of these issues by ensuring that learners were assessed from the same point of reference.  Learners could now study wherever they were able to even chose, but were driven to write the same exams.  From a quality perspective this gave a much better view of what the skills and knowledge level of these learners were.  And the added advantage was that the graduates could have an added internationally-recognized and accredited certification; skills that were relevant and product-specific to the manufacturers and vendors of these very products.  How this helped was that a learner could almost literally walk into, say, an IBM-based environment and have a much better idea and chance of understanding the technical and functional aspects of IBM’s systems.  Such is the added value of these certifications.

Conclusion:

This helped to sort out the confusion of whether the graduates have the adequate skills that are enough for them to at least have a base from which to start.  I do not claim that the learners will be experienced enough to start re-developing or stripping the systems don completely and re-building them; but it is sufficient for the learner to be certified, mostly theoretically, to have a certain level of the systems understanding.

Such is the advantage of international certifications, and hence we have acquired the necessary partnerships and accreditation from these international vendors to ensure that our learners are equipped with e international-matching standards so that they can work in many parts of the world:

We are:

  • Microsoft Partner
  • Cisco Partner
  • Oracle Partner
  • IBM Partner
  • Corel Partner
  • Electronics and Technicians Association (ETA) International Partner
  • Seagate Partner
  • Mustek Partner

Milestones Achieved in 2011 for the 2012 Year (in Distance Education)

education-results-and-milestones-achieved

Education results and milestones achieved

In 2011, so many of us(Individuals, Corporations, Civil society) saw and came across multiple challenges.  There were plenty more factors that affected the economy:

  • The Greece and Euro threats, others still recovering from the economic recession and so forth.  As if that was not enough, we had the continued pressure of rising costs of education!

This then continues to pose challenges to the traditional and non-traditional education service providers and institutions.  Thus the distance learning, education, e learning and online education seem to carry some of the solutions to the ever-present pressures of the cost of education.

Phew, the South African Education System and stakeholders must be so relieved with the 2011 matric(grade 12 / standard 10) results.  We saw an increased percentage in the overall results ( 2.4% increase), but a slight decrease in the Mathematics and Science percentages.

Of another consolation would be the results of the Independent Examination Board (IEB), written by Private Schools.  They boasted a  98,15% pass rate.  This, I believe, should encourage the government to leave the private schools to carry on operating as they do.

This then means so many more learners are able to study at institutions of Higher Education as well as Further Education and Training Colleges.  A better chance for us to produce the required graduates to be able to go better prepared into the workplace, thereby playing an active role in the economy(hopefully giving us a better chance of more knowledgeable, graduates and people, assisting in countering the high levels of poverty and unemployment).

Learning e-Varsity Online experienced exponential growth in the 2011 academic year.  We achieved:

  • Very high Google rankings
  • Extremely high web-hits
  • Tremendous partnerships with international education institutions (recently, a progressive UK-based School of Business and Finance University)
  •  Reached over 100,000 web-hits before our first year anniversary (18th January 2012)
  • Increasing recognition by the Education industry and customers

With this kind of growth and these achievements, 2012 looks very promising for further development and growth in the Distance Learning, e learning and online learning industry.

As for now, we are pleased to have the support from:

  • Our employees and management team
  • Our Customers
  • Our Suppliers
  • Our creditors, financiers, investors and equity partners

These milestones will assist us to achieve our goals of becoming a fully-fledged academic instituion that offers Further Education and Training (FET) College, University Certificates, Diplomas and Degrees.

Happy New Year, 2012 and Beyond!!!

The Best Christmas Present: Education for Life… (Distance Learning)

Distance Education

Distance Education and e learning

During the festive season, (because it is a tradition and somewhat a culture that has been handed down from generation to generation), it is customary that people expect gifts and others expect to give these great gestures.  I believe that we all have memories of Christmas, regardless of social background; we all had these wonderful ideas about what we wanted for our presents.

I personally remember that as a child, I wanted my boyish gifts: bicycle, toy guns, racing cars and so the list goes on and on….

Some of the gifts that people receive are not expensive, whilst others are very costly.  But the value of the gift is not necessarily based on the price tag, but rather on the thought, the person who is giving the present and the person who is receiving the same.  And the retailers and manufacturers are ever-happy to sell more products and produce the required volumes.  All this creates the vibe surrounding this festive period.  Some of the gifts are perishable, whilst others last longer.

Learning e-Varsity believes that in this day and age (with Technology influencing almost all aspects of our lives), gifts should be ever-lasting; at least as humanly as possible.  Some people will buy technology-based gadgets, such as laptops, smart phones, tablet PCs and so forth.  These too have a life span…

Education, we believe is one of the most sought-after presents, even though people do not think of this during the festive season.  However, careful considerations should be made about how much impact we want to have on the people for whom we are buying presents.  Would it not be more economical and personally fulfilling for the person buying the gift and the person receiving the gift, if the gift was life-changing?  And so the choices start being narrowed to a few tangible and even more intangible products.  For the tangible products, you could buy a hearing aid for a needy child, who has hearing challenges, a wheelchair for a child that is unable to walk.  For intangible products, nothing comes close to Education.  Imaging giving someone an opportunity of a lifetime, which would alter their live forever? A gift that would influence, and even have an impact on how the person’s life might turn out years after the gift has been received.  Now this is the part you can play as the real Santa Clause…

We believe that this kind of gift will help in building a legacy for your family, friends, and eventually have an impact of how a certain society grows and develops.

The spirit of Christmas will be here for the rest of human civilization, so why not make the spirit of giving a much more powerful spirit?  Education, and in this case, Distance Education and Learning is by comparison more affordable than traditional means; so would it make no sense to give this?

Education as a present, I know readers will agree with me, is invaluable and priceless.  So buying a priceless gift is an amazing feeling because you can somehow afford it!

BEST WISHES FOR THE FESTIVE SEASON AND A PROSPEROUS 2012!

The Importance of Education On World AIDS Day

Preamble:

Education and the application of this acquired knowledge has always, and will always play an important role across all sectors of our world.  These are our social structures, economy, spiritual and government-based structures.  As a result, Education is seen universally as a weapon to combat various challenges facing us.

Though Education alone might not solve all our social and globals ills, it does progress in the right direction in terms of providing a platform to start moving forward towards this solution-based approach.

Importance:

The important role that  Education plays in our global challenges, with a special emphasis on AIDS in this post, is enormous.  Without sounding like a broken record, but you you imagine the following:

  • What if people did not know what HIV/AIDS was?
  • What if the Science and Medical industries did not have research tools?
  • What if this? What if that? And What if, What if, What if?

The plight of this AIDS epidemic would be so much more catastrophic had Education not been used as one of the weapons to strategically fight this virus.  Again, what if people did not know about prevention tools such as condoms and so forth? And if they did not know about various treatments methods available to them today?

The above goes to show that sometimes, yes, the role of Education is to give people and opportunity to ask questions, to challenge the status quo, to have more willingness to discover the unknown, the desire to uncover paths that have not been travelled as yet.

It is encouraging to see various levels of Civil Society, including communities, corporates, Non-Profit Organizations, Small Businesses, Religious groups and Governments throughout the world putting in their efforts to enlighten and educate each other about this virus.  The World AIDS day is a symbol that a united front can make a huge difference to any situation.

How far we have gone will depend largely on how far the AIDS problem has escalated since its discovery.  But will put my head on the block as an optimist and say that we have made great progress and strides with regards to combating the rapid spread of the virus.  Other factors contributing to the spread are obviously stigma, gender inequality and so forth.  A better post relating to this topic is listed below:

A link from an article by Winnie Ssanyu Sseruma is listed below:

http://blogs.independent.co.uk/2011/12/01/world-aids-day-address-hiv-stigma-or-reaching-zero-will-remain-a-fantasy/

Another excellent site, which shows that people are concerned about Educating people with regards to HIV/AIDS.

http://www.worldaidsday.org/

Conclusion:

Once again, what has this HIV/AIDS topic got to do with Education? As many of our articles and posts have re-iterated…EVERYTHING!

Why e learning will have a positive impact in South Africa

Education South Africa

Education South Africa

Why e learning will have a positive impact in South Africa

By: Abraham Motsoane

Business Manager: Learning e-Varsity

Introduction

Some of the biggest challenges that face our country today are:

  • How do we create a society that is able to cope with the injustices of the past and still manage to thrive in this ever-competitive global economy?
  • How can we ensure that our educational system (by far one the hardest hit industries/systems) is able to redress the wrongs that were created by the previous government?

To some people these questions seem to be looking in the past, but in fact, the paradox is that they address the very future that we are all trying so hard to build.  The reality of any situation is that one cannot even begin to attempt to find a solution when clearly there seems to be no problem.  So, to dig and indeed look for problems is one way that the thriving economies in the world have done extremely well.  Examples are the Japanese, Chinese Germans and other great first world countries.  The fact that they were leaders in certain domains did not make them complacent; instead, on the contrary, they pressed forth trying to find new markets, to find possible things that could go wrong with a seemingly perfect design.  One of the most popular Japanese practices is that, as soon as they release a product, the let people test it and give as much feedback as possible; then back to the lab, once the modified version has been released, the process starts from scratch, as though the product is new (which in fact, based on the modifications, they believe it is a new product – by virtue of the fact that some of the functionalities might be removed, and other be added).

So the learning curve in these countries is never flat, if anything, they want this curve to exist for as long as their civilization exists.

Then I suppose that next question to ask is: What has this got to do with e learning? EVERYTHING!

The fact that the Internet is one of the most revolutionary (& evolutionary) inventions ever, means that so many things change.  How people view the world has changed, how shopping is done changed, how information is shred changed, and how people learn has changed.  The e learning model is not a blanket cover for all Education-related problems, but it certainly answers many of these questions; and it reaches corners that traditional learning methods have not even thought of doing.  For example, the cellular phone has changed how people view communication; and Learning e-Varsity uses this as another advantage to enhance e learning.  What used to be a barrier to education, no man can control and only allow some sectors of the population, and deny others.  The previously marginalized people can now rise, without fear and March through the gates of educational freedom.

The argument bar has now been raised from people needing education, to people being able to use the education they gave acquired.  Through e learning, learners not only acquire the skill/trade that they are interested in, computer skills become almost an automatic acquisition.  The possibilities now start seeming endless; with the advent of mobile and social learning; with both the cellphone and social media breaking all known records with regards to information circulation….

With that, we say:

VIVA e learning….. VIVA!!

VIVA education….. VIVA!!

VIVA online learning….. VIVA!!

Conclusion

No matter what kind of background you come from, with Technology as your weapon, and the desire to succeed as your map, nothing can get in the way of you making a change to your future, and the future of your country.  The global economy will be impacted by the way information is shared today……
